Your New Name

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with  a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

–Revelation 2:17 NIV

You are victorious, and He gives you a new name.

So many times in the Bible God renames many of His children: Abram became Abraham and Sarai became Sarah in Genesis 17:15. Abraham means “father of many,” and God said Sarah means “princess,” the mother of many nations. Hadassah became Esther in Esther 2:10. God knew she could not reveal her identity as a Jew to complete His purpose. God gave her a new name through Mordecai, her uncle. Hadassah means “a myrtle that is very pleasant to smell, and righteousness.” Esther means “hidden.”

Have you thought about your new name? What does God see in your character? For what purpose are you on earth? He has given you the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit. Somewhere in “all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV), dwells your new name.

As a believer of Jesus, you know He wants what is best for you in light of eternity. He will do through you what you cannot do yourself. Your new name is chosen by God.
