The Key to Contentment

NOVEMBER 22ND, 2021      |    Comparison is a trap into which you don’t want to fall prey. It’s been said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” In the believer’s life, who is known as the “joy” stealer? If you answered Satan, you’re right. In order to maintain your joy, you need to avoid comparing areas of your life—appearance, home, clothing, work, marital status, livelihood, etc.—with someone else’s life or the fleeting things of this world.

Without even realizing it, the devices of this world—television, Facebook, advertising, Hollywood, magazines, Instagram, etc.—are avenues where we can easily succumb to comparison. When we become critical toward ourselves by feeling inadequate, less than, worthless, not good enough, or not measuring up, we’ve fallen into the unhealthy trap of comparison. Should this happen, we need to break free from the trap or it will steal our joy, kill our self-esteem, and destroy the quality of our lives.

The opposite of comparison is contentment. Learning to be content with who God created us to be is the key to contentment. We need to be thankful for what God has blessed us with and trust that He will provide for all our needs.

The Key to Contentment

For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread (Proverbs 30:8 NIV).

Holy Spirit, teach me to be content regardless of my circumstances (Philippians 4:11). Remind me to look to God for my needs.
