The Big Cleanup – Part 3

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall. –1 Corinthians 10:12 NIV

Often the biggest objection to cleaning out a cluttered space is that it’s just easier to ignore the unruly areas and leave things as they are. The same objections can be true of keeping your spiritual house in order. While it is easier to turn a blind eye to problems, deterioration is a slow but progressive process. That’s why we need to take regular and honest inventory of our lives to “purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit” (2 Corinthians 7:1 NIV) so that we can present our bodies as “a living sacrifice, holy, and pleasing to God” (Romans 12:1).As you ask God for sensitivity, be alert for Him to reveal areas that were once clean and tidy but may now need maintenance. Open yourself up to Jesus and ask Him to show you areas of disorder and danger. The bottom line is that just like any cleanup project, spiritual orderliness takes discipline, focus, and a lot of plain old hard work. Ultimately, it means developing the virtue of self-control that can only be accomplished by submission of our lives to Jesus Christ and willingness to allow the Holy Spirit to do His transforming work.

God, You are the One who transforms.

Help me agree and cooperate with Your plan. I admit that self-control is hard for me, but that Your Spirit makes me able. Help me trust and obey.
