The Beatitudes Part 6 | Friday | May 24

God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.

–Matthew 5:8 NLT

The Greek word for heart is kardia. The word can refer to either the physical heart or to the spiritual center of life. Kardia is where thoughts, desires, sense of purpose, will, understanding, and character reside. The pure heart has a desire to please God in all things.

When we give our heart to Jesus, we ask Him to do the cleansing work. Psalm 51:10 (NIV) says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” God is the One who makes our hearts pure by the sacrifice of His Son and through His sanctifying work in our lives. First John 3:3 (NIV) tells us, “All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.”

Prayer Focus

  • Ask God to help you feel His unconditional love and show that love to others.
  • God looks at the heart, but people look at the outside (see 1 Samuel 16:7). Remember today to look at the inside of a person instead of their outer appearance.
