Speak, Lord

And the Lord came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”

–1 Samuel 3:10 NLT

For years, young Samuel had been serving the High Priest, Eli, in the Temple. One night the Lord called Samuel by name. Because Samuel did not yet know the Lord personally, he mistook the voice for Eli’s and ran to his side. This occurred three times before Eli perceived what was happening. He instructed Samuel what to do. When the Lord called again, Samuel was ready with his response.

Samuel answered the Lord’s call with an invitation for Him to “speak,” accompanied by his submissive pledge, “your servant is listening.” The word “listen” means to hear with attention, coupled with the intention to obey. Samuel committed his full attention to the Lord along with his assurance of obedience.

Jesus promised you would hear and know His voice (see John 10: 4,27). He said the Holy Spirit would speak to you, relaying truth and revealing things to come (see John 16:13). Give the Lord an opportunity to speak to you today. Follow Samuel’s example. Position yourself, humbly surrendering your will. Choose a quiet place and time, free of distractions. Give God your full attention, assuring Him of your obedience. Then invite Him sincerely to, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

Prayer Focus

  • Invite the Holy Spirit to relay to you what God has to say about any problem or situation in your life. Expect to hear.
  • Tell the Lord you want to know what is on His heart today. Let Him know you have ears to hear and are willing to obey.
