Our Relationship with Others: Day Six

JANUARY 9TH, 2021      |      We are created in the image of a Triune God, a “we” not an “I.” At our core we are highly relational beings, we are created for deep, emotional connection with others. The phrase “one another” occurs 412 times in the NIV. For example, throughout the New Testament we are encouraged to honor one another, love one another, be devoted to one another and live in harmony with one another. We are exhorted to stop passing judgment on one another, instruct one another, accept one another and forgive one another. Take a casual read through the letters from Paul and you can see that we were meant to do life together, with one another. Acts 2:42-47 describes what biblical community looks like. The early church spent time together in the Word and in prayer. They shared their meals and their possessions. They were unified in heart and mind. And the Lord blessed their community with His favor and by bringing others to a saving knowledge of Himself. This is the pattern for how we ought to live our lives. In a culture that reveres individualism and self-reliance, this is increasingly difficult. However, it is always worth the risk, the mess, and the uncomfortable for the joy, mystery and sacredness of living in community with one another. Pastor Randy Bezet, lead pastor of Bayside Community Church, says often, “Life change happens in the context of relationships.” It’s true. We are changed, challenged, healed and helped in community. We are created for it! What are the obstacles that keep you from engaging in biblical community? Do you keep others at arm’s length? What would be a next step for you to dive more deeply into community? Join a serve team? A small group? Participate in an outreach event? Ask the Lord. What is He saying to you about this?
