Our Church: Day Twenty

JANUARY 23RD, 2021      |        For the Jewish people, the Torah (first five books of the Old Testament) was the center of life. In the 1st century educational system, the text was preeminent. By the time a student was a teenager, they would have memorized the entire Torah – this would have been Jesus’ experience. They held the belief that if the text doesn’t get into the mind and soul of the child, you are one generation away from being extinct as a faith community. Judges 2:10 (NLT) says, “After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things He had done for Israel.” This is one of the saddest verses in all of scripture. In our verses today, Paul reminds Timothy to take what he has learned and “entrust to faithful men (and women), who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Tim. 2:2) Young people are the future of our country, the world and the Church. It is our responsibility to pass on to the next generation a passion for His Presence, a grounding in His Word and an example of serving and loving that will outlive us. This is our legacy. Who are the young people in your life you are responsible to train and teach? How will you pass on your faith? Through family devotions? Praying together? How can you support other young people in your sphere of influence?

Responding to the Word

What is the Holy Spirit saying to you from God’s Word?

How can you apply this to your life?

Prayer

Pray that the next generation would be grounded in the Word of God.

Pray that they would be secure in their identity in Christ and not the world.

Pray for their protection from an enemy who seeks to steal, kill and destroy.
