Motive Check

All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.

–Proverbs 16:2 NIV

Why do you do what you do? Are you doing things from a pure heart to please God, or are you trying to please people?

In Jeremiah 17:9, God makes it clear why we sin—it’s a matter of the heart. In Hebrews 4:12, God’s Word requires decisions. We must not only listen to the Word, we must also let it shape our lives.

Be honest with yourself and with God. What spurs you into action? Are you motivated by your own desires and reasoning, or are you truly seeking God to direct which way to go? Matthew 6:1 is another reminder about your motives. Are you hoping to be seen by people—or are you motivated by the Spirit of God?

Prayer Focus

  • Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth. Ask Him to be the keeper of your heart.
  • Know that you are walking in God’s truth. Read the Word of God and ask Him to help you proceed on your path of freedom in Christ.
