Martha, Martha

And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” –Luke 10:41-42 NKJV

Martha, Martha

Many have read the story of Mary and Martha (see Luke 10:38-42). It’s a short story that probably takes two minutes to read, but it has a lot to say in this brief narrative.

Jesus pays the two sisters a visit. While Martha was busy working away to have things just so, Mary decides to sit with Jesus to hear His encouraging words. Martha placed chores above Jesus. Mary placed Jesus above chores.

Mary knows the housework needed to be done, especially since they had a guest, but she also knew she needed to put the chores on hold so that she could spend quality time with the One who would keep her soul swept and polished. Martha failed to see the significance of waiting to do her work.

Isn’t that what we do? The house needs to be cleaned, bills paid, dog walked, etc. Although “life” needs to be dealt with, taking a few moments to sit with Jesus to hear Him is just as, if not more, important. The chores will get done in a timely manner. Rest with Jesus, and let Him speak life into you.

Before starting your day, sit with Jesus and talk with Him; your day will probably go much smoother.

If you are not able to find time with Him, there may be too much on your plate. Ask God to help you prioritize.
