Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. –1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV
John 8:44 tells us exactly who Satan is and what his disposition is like. He is a murderer and a liar, and lies are his native tongue. He is more than just a liar; he is the father of all lies. So if we know this, why do we listen to him? Over and over in our minds, we might hear things like, “You’re worthless,” “Nobody loves you,” and “You can’t do that.” In contrast to Satan’s character, we see One much different from Satan the liar—God. The Bible contains a myriad of Scriptures that describe God’s character—eternal, gracious, merciful, wise, powerful, loving, just, and truthful. John 14:6 says that Jesus is the way, the TRUTH, and the life. What a contrast to Satan! So while Satan is the epitome of lies, God is the epitome of truth. When you hear demeaning voices in your head, you can know immediately that is not God speaking to you—it goes against His character. Since you now know that Satan is controlling those thoughts, you can know that it’s all a lie. If he says you’re inept, it’s because he knows you’re more than able. You’re a threat to him, and he knows it. Let your response to Satan and these thoughts be, “Liar!” and watch him flee!
When, not if, those negative thoughts come, ask the Holy Spirit to help you resist them and proclaim God’s truth instead.
Father, help me to remember that Satan is a liar! When Satan puts the thought in my mind: “Nobody loves you,” I will proclaim that I am Your beloved child. Thank You for always loving me!
