What Things Are You Immersed In?

And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” -Luke 2:49 NKJV

When Jesus was twelve years old, there were a few days that His parents couldn’t find Him and they were frantic. When they finally found Him, He was in the temple, completely unaware that there was a problem. His parents scolded Him and told Him how worried and upset they were but Jesus gave the response found in the verse for today.

Busyness is to be involved in “lively but meaningless activity,” while business is “an occupation, profession or trade; a building;” or “that with which a person is principally and seriously concerned,” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/business?s=t).

Looking at these two words, the visual difference is the fourth letter: Y in busyness and I in business. If you have ownership over an issue, you’re going to be fully immersed in it, because you have a stake in its success.  But, if you have a “deflector-ship” about an issue, you are no longer involved and have turned away from it.

Jesus said He was fully immersed in the things that were important to His Father. In John 5:19, Jesus said, “The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”

Are you immersed in the things—the business—that is important to the Father or are you frantic and caught up in the busyness of life? If it’s the second, seek out time with the Father today and fully immerse yourself in His business.

Prayer Focus

  • Thank God for this reminder and that He trusts you to complete the things that are important to Him.
  • Pray for God to help you hear His voice.
