But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
–Matthew 23:12 NLT
Humble means not proud or haughty, not arrogant or assertive. How does that definition translate into your Christian walk? Are you genuinely sorry when a sin is committed? Do you readily forgive when others offend you? Do you view yourself above others?
A humble spirit is not a weakness but something beautiful that reflects a Christ-like life. It is living your life in closeness with your Savior. The greatest example of what it means to be truly humble is Jesus. It is hard to comprehend Jesus leaving the glory of Heaven to come down to earth and take humankind’s deserved punishment on Himself.
Matthew 16:24 (NLT) says, If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. Strive to forgive and be ready to apologize and genuinely repent for every sin you commit. When you seek a humble heart, you will be blessed, as Psalm 149:4 (NLT) says, For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.
- Ask God to give you a humble heart.
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to live and think through you.
