Honoring Your Mother

MAY 8TH, 2021      |    You may find it easy to love and respect your mom. God chose a God-fearing mother to birth, nurture, and guide you for many years. She taught, encouraged, and disciplined you in the ways of the Lord. Her faith, values, and obedience to God helped shape you into the person you are today. When Mother’s Day arrives, you freely celebrate and affirm your gratitude to her.

But maybe Mother’s Day isn’t all that positive for you. Your mom may not have been a healthy individual or even a spiritual role model. As a result, your heart might be harboring bitterness. This bitter root robs you of God’s abundant blessings. He wants you to enjoy life more than you could ever imagine. Forgiveness is key to unlocking more joy and blessings of the Lord in your life.

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He included the importance of forgiveness. In Luke 11:4 (NIV), Jesus says, “Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us….” God graciously bestows His mercy and forgiveness onto you. He desires you do the same to others. Reread our opening verse, which actually comes with a promise. Seek to honor your mom this coming Mother’s Day so that all will be well with your soul. After all, God chose her to give birth to you.

Honoring Your Mother

“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

–Ephesians 6:2-3 NIV

Pray that God would help you see your mother as He sees her.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to grow in love toward all the women God has placed in your life.
