Good Works

But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one!

–Psalm 14:3 NLT

You may hear people say they are a good person because of their good works. However, Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

It is not what you do but what Jesus did for you. Once you accept the free gift of salvation and realize the price paid on the Cross, then good works follow. It is not about you trying to reach God, but God reaching down to you by sending His Son to take your place. If your good works were all you had to do for your eternal salvation, then Jesus’ death on the Cross was in vain.

Good works only follow faith, not self. You must be clear about the biblical fact that grace is God’s unmerited favor. If you can do something to earn it, it’s not grace. Grace means you get the opposite of what you deserve. You cannot earn it, nor do you deserve it. It is a gift.

Prayer Focus

  • Praise God each day for sending His Son to take your place on the Cross.
  • Thank God for His grace that is freely given to you.
