Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will. -2 Corinthians 8:2-5 NIV
The Macedonian church wanted to help others even though they themselves were poor. They understood that it is not the amount of money given that is important but what is important is the heart that gives it. They displayed a heart for Christ and for one another as they not only gave but they gave sacrificially to Paul’s mission of spreading the Gospel.
God does not want your gifts given grudgingly, but with a joyful heart. God wants you to give as the church of Macedonia did—out of your dedication to Christ, your love for fellow believers, and the joy of helping those in need.
- Thank God for the opportunities you have to give.
