Give It a Rest

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, my burden’s light. –Matthew 11:28-30

Have you ever repeatedly urged someone to do something with you, or for you, and have had them reply, “Give it a rest”? This expression is an informal way of saying, “Stop talking about it.” The person can’t be bothered with you right now.Do you then approach your heavenly Father, expecting that same rejection in your prayer closet? Do you fear asking the Lord for anything because you believe that He, too, can’t be bothered with you?Jesus counters this fear in Matthew 11:28 (NIV), saying, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He doesn’t say, “Give it a rest. I can’t be bothered with you.” He urges you to come and receive His undivided attention. He is both gentle and humble, providing comfort. As He responds, you can learn from Him. He offers grace and mercy. The world says, “Give it a rest”; but our Lord says, “I’ll give you rest.” He will never reject you, and He’s never too busy to hear your cry. Enter into His rest; He’s waiting.
