Free and Anointed

The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free…

–Luke 4:18 NIV

Peter revealed Jesus’ purpose and identity with these words, You are the Christ, the Son of the living Go (Matthew 16:16 NKJV).  The Christ, Messiah, Anointed One—three titles with the same meaning—someone set apart, sent, and empowered by God to fulfill a specific purpose.

Christ is not Jesus’ last name; it’s His empowered purpose. Son of God is His identity. Jesus, the Anointed One, was sent by God to proclaim good news to the helpless, destitute, and poor. The Holy Spirit empowered Him to demonstrate the Kingdom of God to hopeless, sin-bound prisoners. God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing ALL who were oppressed by the devil (Acts 10:38).

Maybe you need to hear this Good News.

Jesus wants to set you free today. He wants to forgive, cleanse, and heal you. Give Him your life, your sin, and your hurts. Receive His life, love, and acceptance. Go ahead—take your new identity, child of God. Be free. Be made whole. Then allow the Holy Spirit to anoint and empower you to preach the same Good News to those around you, demonstrating the Kingdom of God, bringing freedom to those in need.

Prayer Focus

  • Ask the Lord to show you any sin you need to confess and be free of and any areas in need of healing.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to bring people in your path who need to hear His Good News.
