Faded Flowers

OCTOBER 28TH, 2020      |      Most people enjoy a vase of fresh flowers. The stunning beauty and bold fragrance can encourage us for a long time before they began to wither and lose their allure. But if we look a little deeper, believers can see something of eternity even in their faded state—a faint echo of Isaiah 40:6.

Of course, not many want to be reminded that their existence is brief, limited, fragile, and waning (Isaiah 40:7). But that isn’t all the prophet was instructed to declare. He also reminded us that even in our frail state, there is hope found in God’s promise to care for us like a tender Shepherd embraces the lambs of his flock (Isaiah 40:10-11).

The truth is, we all are fading, but perhaps the lesson to be gleaned from wilting flowers is a reminder of the beauty and brevity of life. We can hold fast to the knowledge that we are not like a bouquet, here today and discarded tomorrow. The herald of Scripture is that this existence is not all there is. Our Father’s love for us and promise of salvation for those who trust in Jesus is constant, unalterable, and endures for all eternity.

Faded Flowers

…All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.

–Isaiah 40:6 ESV

God, help me make the most of my time here, holding firmly to the promise that there is joy at Your right hand for eternity.

Jesus, focus my attention on all that is lasting. Help me not be distracted by the fading allure of all that’s in the world.
