Don’t Try to Figure it Out on Your Own

Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God!

–Proverbs 3:5-7 MSG

How often have you heard the advice in this verse but failed to put it into action? How often has your quest to craft the perfect solution resulted in consequences that you didn’t foresee?

As a Christian, you have a tool that others don’t—the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will bring to your mind something you need to think about. He will tell you about somebody who needs your attention, a circumstance you didn’t know, or something that could cause great harm or distress.

How do you hear God’s voice? First, be still. Take time to simply listen during your prayer times. Sometimes we pray as if we should do all of the talking, but that’s not how God intends it. Second, read His word. Often what He says will be confirmed by the reading of His Word. Finally, talk to other Christians you trust. Have mentors who respect you enough to be honest when you ask them for their opinion.

When you listen to God’s voice, your plans may change but the result will be more fruitful. The next time you have a decision to make, ask God to make it for you.

Prayer Focus

  • Thank God for perfect timing and for providing all you need.
  • Pray that you’ll trust God with all you have, because it all belongs to Him.
