Darkness that Can Be Felt

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness will spread over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.”

 -Exodus 10:21 NIV

Moses and Aaron continued to perform the signs and miracles the Lord told them to do in Egypt. But the Lord continued to harden Pharaoh’s heart, so the promises Pharaoh made to Moses and Aaron were no good. He refused to let the Hebrew people go. Think about the many plagues they had endured already: blood, frogs, gnats, flies, livestock, boils, hail, locusts; and now the darkness.

Exodus tells us this darkness could be felt; the Egyptians could not move nor could they see anyone for 72 hours.

What was the purpose of these plagues? Not only to let the Israelites go follow Moses to worship the Lord or for the salvation of Israel from the bondage of Egypt, but so the Egyptians would know there is no one like the Lord in all the earth and the earth is His.

God was flexing His muscles and the Egyptians would know it in every fiber of their being. They quickly learned who the Lord was and that He was not like anyone else.

Prayer Focus

  • Pray God will allow you to recognize He is not only in control of nature, but every last detail of your life.
  • Pray God will open your eyes to know the earth is the Lord’s, both everything in it and all who live in it.
