But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. -James 5:12 ESV
Commitment is a character trait of God, a quality with which He wants us to be intimately acquainted. Commitment is not a promise, it is the point when the promise is kept. Commitment requires planning, perseverance, and sacrifice.
Breaking a promise requires nothing. God promised to save humanity, and Jesus was His commitment. Knowing God’s heart means knowing how to keep commitments. It means not just making a promise, but also doing the necessary planning, perseverance, and sacrifice to keep the commitment.
How do you show commitment to others in your life? Always arriving on time? Calling somebody when you said you would? Being a listener to a friend going through difficulty? We are to be like Christ. Find ways to show commitment to those around you. God will use it to bring glory to Him.
- Thank God for all the promises that He has written in His word that are yours for the asking.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to give help you stay committed to the things that God views as important.
