Big Bad Wolf

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble;  he knows those who take refuge in him. -Nahum 1:7 ESV

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble;  he knows those who take refuge in him. -Nahum 1:7 ESV

Who’s afraid of the big, bad wolf?
Big, bad wolf, big bad wolf, big, bad wolf
Who’s afraid of the big, bad wolf?
La la la la la la

Compare the verse of the day, found in Nahum 1:7, to the house of bricks from the Three Little Pigs. If you’ll recall, there were three little pigs and each pig made up his own house: one of straw, one of sticks, and one of bricks. The two pigs who made their houses of weaker materials were done faster and then had time to laugh and play, making fun of the third pig who worked all day on his house of bricks.

But he told them that they’d be sorry for not making a sturdier house. As you know, the wolf came and paid a visit to each pig saying, “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down.” And he succeeded with the first two pigs who then ran for refuge in the third pig’s house of bricks. When the wolf came to the house of bricks, no matter how much he huffed and puffed he was never able to blow that house down.

And that’s the way it is when you make God the mighty fortress in your life. When the day of trouble comes—and it will—other houses will be blown down without any trouble at all, but God’s house stands firm forever.

In today’s society, we don’t use sticks and straw for a refuge; we use money, power, success, stature, other people, food, “stuff,” and so on.   When these items are in their proper place in your life, there’s nothing wrong with them. But when they are expected to be a strong tower and mighty fortress in your life, they will be blown down quickly when trouble arises.

God may use some of these things to help you out but He should still be the One you turn to and allow to move mightily in your life.

Money and power are nothing compared to the power of God in your life. God desires to be a mighty fortress in your life, and to be the One you turn to in your times of trouble.

Prayer Focus

  • Pray for the wisdom to build your life on the foundation of Jesus Christ.
  • Pray that God would reveal to you those things in your life that you are turning to rather than Him.
